PAGCL is a progressive loss of cartilage in the shoulder joint, which leads to significant pain in the shoulder and severe limitations on movement. This progressive disorder has no known cure or effective treatment. Patients begin showing symptoms within two months of surgery, and PAGCL is usually diagnosed around eight months after the use of the pain pumps. About half of PAGCL victims harmed by pain pumps have had to undergo arthroscopy or arthroplasty (joint replacement) to repair the damage.
Symptoms of PAGCL include:
- Increased stiffness in the shoulder
- Shoulder pain (either when in motion or at rest)
- Clicking shoulder
- Popping shoulder
- Grinding shoulder
- Shoulder weakness
- Decreased range of motion in the shoulder
If you suspect you have PAGCL following the use of a pain pump, what is your best course of action?
- Seek Medical Attention. If you or a member of your family appear to be afflicted with symptoms of PAGCL, or with some other type of problem that you believe arose from the use of a pain pump, you should seek medical attention immediately. Obtaining prompt medical treatment will put you in the best possible position to resolve an issue before it worsens. It will also help document your injuries if you decide to pursue a legal remedy.
- Obtain Your Medical Records. Determining whether the catheter was placed intra-articularly is of primary importance in these cases. Thus, it is imperative to have copies of your medical records. Although bringing them to MEDLAW Legal Team lawyers will speed up the process, we are also able to order copies of all necessary medical records from the prescribing doctors, clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies that indicate your shoulder surgery as well as initial diagnosis and treatment of chondrolysis or PAGCL. Once the records are reviewed by a medical expert, we will inform you as to whether we believe you have a claim. If so, we will file a case for you. Either way, having your records reviewed can provide peace of mind.
- Pursue Your Legal Options. Should you decide to pursue a lawsuit, which is your legal right, you will be one more voice among the dozens of patients who have been similarly harmed. Your lawsuit will make many of the same allegations as those other patients. Those allegations include:
- The pain pump manufacturers ignored the FDA’s denial of their applications to insert pain pump medication directly into the joint space.
- Instead, pain pump makers told health care providers that the pain pumps could be safely used in the joint space.
- The pain pump makers failed to warn doctors of the serious side effects, including PAGCL, from the unapproved use of the medical devices.
- Unsuspecting patients developed suffered catastrophic injuries to their shoulders, including PAGCL, a permanent and crippling destruction of the cartilage that keeps bones from rubbing together.
- Hire a Qualified Attorney. Prospective plaintiffs can find out more about their legal rights, as well as whether a shoulder pain pump lawsuit is right for them, by meeting with an experienced shoulder pain pump attorney.
